About The Department
Baba Farid Centre for Sufi Studies aims at providing a contemporary, extensive and wide-angled direction to sufistic researches. For centuries Sufism has been the path through which the best minds of India and entire Asia have expressed themselves. The centre will focus on interdespenery researches, involving scholars of different disciplines, to establish that Sufism can be a source for researches in humanism, world peace, Ideology, medieval Indian society, history, trade, commerce, art, linguistic system etc Sufi literature, bearing on the life and people of Asia, has been produced in Persian. Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and also in European languages. Baba Farid Centre for Sufi Studies will be the first centre of its kind that targets this vast research material, still waiting to see the light of the day. There are so many aspects hitherto unexplored and the Centre can play a pioneering role in bringing all these to light
Objectives
- To innovate and preserve ideology, history, art, culture, education and social welfare through Sufi and Bhagti tradition.
- To promote, disseminate and develop the rich diversity and uniqueness of Sufism.
- To upgrade and enrich consciousness of the people about their heritage in Punjab with special emphasis of Sufi traditions.
- To establish and promote linkages among various areas through evolution of Sufism and its contribution to the larger composite identity of cultural heritage of the world.
- To encourage interest in Sufism and frame special programs for its preservation and dissemination.
- To pursue such other projects, activities and programs as would strengthen and promote the cultural inter-linkages amongst people.
- To promote excellence in research in higher education through Sufi history, literature, art and music etc.
- To understand and highlight the common ground of Sufism & philosophy of Indian traditions.
- To highlight the contributions of Sufism in the pretext of medieval Indian Society.
- Understand and disseminate Sufi philosophy enunciated by spiritual thinkers.
Programmes & Policies
- To promote research and to grant fellowship and scholarships for outreach study related to above objectives.
- To frame such programs as would encourage and involve the youth on creative cultural communications through the process of conferences, festivals, seminars, and workshops on matters relating to Sufi heritage.
- To popularize and preserve the real essence. of Sufi music.
- To publish books and journals on Sufism.
- Documentation of Sufi heritage.
- To spread and communicate the massage of Sufism especially related to world peace and harmony in masses.
- Provide teaching support to other university departments on the subject.
- Conduct a full time or part time course on the subject.
